Hi everyone,
Happy DRY weekend. It has been quite a week. I am glad that the rain is done for a few days. I have to say that I have enjoyed reading the text. Yes I know that sounds strange but the book is well written. It did a nice job explaining the differences between one and two way communication and allowed me to take the time to reflect on the abilities of Moodle.
Talkshoe was a new experience for me on Thursday. I like the fact that it is web-based so I can log on anywhere. It is a great resource for listening to a presenter or instructors. I like the idea that the students can text and could call in to talk to Dr. Newberry if we wanted to.
Here are my responses to the 4 questions for the week. I will post comments tomorrow evening .
Best wishes to …

HI Chris, I'll keep this short since I think the last time I tried to comment on your blog I couldn't get it to work. If this works I'll comment again for real. Sue
ReplyDeleteOk, it worked! Here is the real comment
ReplyDeleteFirst it really sounds like you've been experimenting with a number of ideas I'd like to try! I'm interested in students uploading work and going to a paperless class. So far there seem to be some problems with just having students send work as attachments... I'm interested in your use of chat in class. Do you see any issues related to writing skills? Does the use of chat allow shy kids or English learners to follow the discussion more easily? Are there kids who just can't use the written format as well as they could if it was oral? Also you talked about being overwhelmed with options - I agree! By the time I'm comfortable with a technology the world has moved on. I'm not sure how I'll ever catch up. But when I go to a workshop (recently I went to Voice Threading) I get pretty excited about what could be... the problem is breaking this enthusiasm into steps I can really take. Sue
Hi Sue,
ReplyDeleteWhen I had the students upload their projects I told them it needed to be in MS word which all of the computers in my lab have. I have not really had much experience with my students using chat so I was interested in seeing how they would respond. I did have students that did not participate in the chats or would respond in text talk. The main objective of the chat was to get students used to the chat and get some discussion going. It still needs some work. The chat did go too fast so some students did get lost so I wish I could use a Skype type structure to get them to talk and discuss.
I am looking at creating another class in Moodle for 6th Graders for a trimester and I know that I need to slow down and focus on the proceedures and the value of the technology. I felt too rushed last time. I want to try different software but the district blocks most of the software. I am in the process of setting the class up now.
Thank you for your posts.
Well done! I am especially interested in learning more about your thinking in the area of online high schools. This is definitely something that is coming.
ReplyDeleteHello Chris,
ReplyDeleteI am just getting started with the MA Instructional Technology program. Since you are almost done with the program and you are already working in the field, I hope I can ask you questions whenever the need be.
Also, I find your blog interesting and educative.

Having younger children at home (my sister is a Junior, my daughter in 7th and son in 4th grade) I was amazed to read that you stated by 2013 some high school classes will be on-line!! I don't know if I would want that for my children. It is an adjustment, something to think about!! lol
